Thinking of importing a car to Kenya? Whether it's a Toyota Axio from Japan, a Subaru Forester from the UK, or a Nissan Note from Singapore — the biggest question is always: how much will KRA charge me? PesaCalc's Kenya Car Import Duty Calculator uses official KRA CRSP data and the latest Finance Act rates to give you an accurate, itemised breakdown in seconds.

💰

Why this matters: A car with a KES 1,500,000 customs value can cost over KES 2,500,000 after all KRA taxes and port charges. Our free calculator shows you the full breakdown — Import Duty, Excise Duty, VAT, IDF, and Railway Levy — before you commit to buying. Try it now →

July 2025 CRSP Update: KRA released a new Current Retail Selling Price list effective 1st July 2025 — the first major update since 2019 — covering 5,200+ vehicle models. Values on several popular models changed significantly. Always use an up-to-date calculator and confirm final figures with a licensed clearing agent before importing.

All KRA Charges: What You Will Actually Pay in 2025–2026

Every imported car is subject to five government charges, calculated in a specific sequence from the Customs Value. Missing the order changes your total by hundreds of thousands of shillings.

Tax / LevyRateCalculated On
Import Duty25%Customs Value (CRSP-based or CIF, whichever is higher)
Excise Duty10–35% by engine/fuelCustoms Value + Import Duty
VAT16%Customs Value + Import Duty + Excise Duty + IDF + RDL
Import Declaration Fee (IDF)3.5% (min KES 5,000)Customs Value
Railway Development Levy (RDL)2%Customs Value

Excise Duty Rates by Engine Size and Fuel Type

Excise Duty is the most variable tax — and the one most importers get wrong. It depends on three things: engine capacity (CC), fuel type, and whether the vehicle is electric.

Engine CapacityFuel TypeExcise Duty Rate
Up to 1,500ccPetrol20%
1,501cc – 3,000ccPetrol25%
Over 3,000ccPetrol35%
Up to 2,500ccDiesel25%
Over 2,500ccDiesel35%
Any engine sizeHybrid (petrol-electric)10%
Any engine sizePure Electric (BEV)10%
💡

Hybrid vs petrol duty difference: A Toyota Prius (1,800cc hybrid) pays 10% excise duty. A petrol Corolla of the same engine size pays 25%. On a KES 1,500,000 customs value, that single difference saves approximately KES 281,250 in excise duty alone — before VAT cascades on top. This is why hybrid imports dominate the upper end of Kenya's used car market.

KRA Depreciation Table: How Vehicle Age Reduces Your Customs Value

KRA does not tax a 7-year-old car the same as a new one. They apply an official depreciation schedule to the CRSP reference value based on the vehicle's age from first registration. The calculator applies these rates automatically.

Vehicle Age (from first registration)Depreciation Applied% of CRSP Used
Under 1 year (new)0%100%
1 year old10%90%
2 years old20%80%
3 years old30%70%
4 years old40%60%
5 years old50%50%
6 years old55%45%
7 years old60%40%
8 years old (maximum allowed)65%35%
⚠️

The 8-Year Import Rule: Kenya strictly prohibits importing vehicles older than 8 years from the date of first registration. In 2026, this means only vehicles first registered in 2018 or later can be imported. Vehicles exceeding this age limit are rejected at the port of entry and must be re-exported at the importer's expense — no exceptions.

The Exact KRA Calculation Formula

This is the precise sequence KRA uses. Every step feeds into the next — which is why getting the order wrong gives you a completely different total.

1
Find Customs Value
Look up your vehicle's CRSP value. Apply age depreciation. Compare to your actual CIF value (purchase price + freight + insurance to Mombasa). KRA uses whichever is higher.
2
Import Duty = 25% × Customs Value
Flat 25% rate applied to the Customs Value. No exceptions for vehicle type or age.
3
Excise Duty = Rate × (Customs Value + Import Duty)
Rate is 10–35% depending on engine capacity and fuel type. Applied to Customs Value plus the Import Duty already calculated in Step 2.
4
IDF = 3.5% × Customs Value  |  RDL = 2% × Customs Value
Both levies are calculated independently on Customs Value only, not on the duty-inclusive amount.
5
VAT = 16% × (Customs Value + Import Duty + Excise Duty + IDF + RDL)
VAT cascades on top of everything. This is the most expensive single line item for most vehicle imports because it is applied to the sum of all previous charges.

Beyond KRA: Full Import Cost Budget

KRA taxes are only part of your total cost. Add these to get a realistic landed cost:

💡

Add a 5–10% buffer. Exchange rate movements between when you purchase the vehicle and when it arrives at Mombasa can shift the KES equivalent of your USD invoice — directly changing the Customs Value KRA uses. Build in a buffer, especially for high-value imports.

Frequently Asked Questions

QHow much does it cost to import a car to Kenya?
Total landed cost depends on the vehicle's Customs Value, engine size, fuel type, and age. As a rough guide: KRA taxes typically add 70–100% of the Customs Value for petrol cars, and 55–75% for hybrids. Add KES 160,000–220,000 for port, SGR, clearing, inspection, and registration costs on top. Use PesaCalc's free calculator to get a precise figure for your specific vehicle.
QAre hybrids taxed the same as petrol cars in Kenya?
No — and this is one of the most important things to know before choosing a car to import. Hybrids (petrol-electric) attract 10% Excise Duty regardless of engine size. Petrol-only vehicles pay 20–35% depending on CC. On a KES 1.5M customs value, that difference is over KES 200,000 in Excise Duty alone, which then also reduces the VAT calculated on top of it. Only pure electric vehicles (BEVs) also qualify for the 10% rate.
QWhat is CRSP and how does KRA use it?
CRSP (Current Retail Selling Price) is KRA's official price reference database for used vehicles. When you import a car, KRA compares your declared CIF value (cost + insurance + freight) to the CRSP value depreciated for the vehicle's age. KRA uses whichever is higher as the Customs Value. This prevents under-declaration. The CRSP was substantially updated in July 2025 — always verify current values before budgeting an import.
QHow accurate is the PesaCalc import duty calculator?
The calculator uses official KRA CRSP data and the exact tax formulas from the Finance Act. It is typically very accurate for planning purposes. The final amount is determined by KRA customs at clearance based on the actual documents and vehicle inspection. Always add a 5–10% buffer and verify with a licensed clearing agent before committing to a purchase.
QCan I import a car older than 8 years to Kenya?
No. The 8-year age limit is strictly enforced. In 2026, only vehicles first registered in 2018 or later can be imported. There are no exceptions for private importers. Vehicles exceeding this limit are rejected at port and must be re-exported at the importer's cost.
QDo I need a clearing agent to import a car in Kenya?
Yes. All customs declarations must be submitted by a KRA-licensed Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agent. You cannot self-clear a vehicle. Clearing agent fees range from KES 15,000 to KES 40,000 depending on the agent and vehicle value. Verify your agent's KRA licence before paying any fees.
QIs it cheaper to buy locally or import a car in Kenya?
For cars with a total landed cost under KES 2 million, buying from an established local dealer is often comparable once all import costs are factored in. For higher-value vehicles — premium SUVs, specific JDM models, newer hybrid variants — importing can save KES 500,000–1,500,000 compared to the local market price for equivalent condition and spec. Run your numbers first using PesaCalc's calculator.
QWhat documents do I need to import a car to Kenya?
Core documents: original purchase invoice, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Conformity / KEBS Pre-Export Verification (obtained in the origin country), vehicle's foreign registration certificate or logbook, Marine Insurance Certificate, and your KRA PIN. Your clearing agent submits the Customs Entry (IDF) on your behalf. Missing any document causes costly delays at Mombasa port.
