How Fast Can You Get Your Money Out? Kenyan MMF Withdrawal Times Compared (2026)
Ziidi is instant, Cytonn takes ~3 minutes under KES 300,000, Etica pays same day, Britam 48 hours, most others 2 to 4 working days. The full liquidity league table and how to design around it.
Every money market fund advert leads with the yield. Almost none leads with the answer to the question that decides emergencies: how fast can I get my money back? Withdrawal speed in Kenya now ranges from literally instant to four working days, and the differences are big enough to design your savings around.
The 2026 liquidity league table
| Fund | Typical payout | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ziidi (Safaricom) | Instant to M-PESA | From the M-PESA menu; minimum withdrawal KES 10 |
| Cytonn | ~3 minutes under KES 300,000 | Above 300,000 goes to bank, 2 to 4 working days |
| Etica | Same day to M-PESA up to ~KES 250,000 | Bank transfers 1 to 2 working days |
| Britam | ~48 hours to 3 working days | M-PESA usually nearer 48 hours |
| CIC, Sanlam and most others | 2 to 4 working days | Standard instruction-and-processing cycle |
| For contrast: T-bills and fixed deposits | Locked to maturity | Early exit is a rediscount or penalty conversation |
| For contrast: Mansa X | 6-month initial lock-in | Then roughly 48 to 72 hours |
Payout speeds are as published or reported for each manager in mid-2026 and can change; confirm with your fund before relying on them.
Why the speeds differ
Instant funds sit on mobile-money rails: Ziidi settles inside M-PESA itself, and Cytonn pre-authorises small payouts. Traditional funds settle through instructions, trustee checks and bank transfers, which is where the 2 to 4 working days comes from. Neither model is wrong; one prioritises access, the other typically carries higher yields and larger institutional books.
Notice the pattern in the numbers, though. In the July 2026 yield table the instant funds sat at the lower end (Ziidi about 6.4% gross) while the slower funds led (Nabo about 13.8%, Cytonn about 11.9% being the notable exception with both speed and yield under KES 300,000). Liquidity is a feature you pay for, usually invisibly.
Put numbers on your own setup
Use the money market fund calculator to see what your cushion earns at each fund's current yield, model the named funds directly (Cytonn, Ziidi, Etica, Britam), and compare the locked alternatives with the T-bill and fixed deposit calculators.
Ziidi (Safaricom) is instant to M-PESA from the SIM menu. Cytonn processes withdrawals under KES 300,000 to M-PESA or bank in about 3 minutes. Etica pays same day to M-PESA for amounts up to about KES 250,000. Larger amounts at any fund generally go to your bank and take 2 to 4 working days.
Britam quotes roughly 48 hours to three working days, with M-PESA payouts typically nearer the 48-hour mark. Plan around it rather than testing it during an emergency.
Most Kenyan MMFs charge no withdrawal fee, though normal M-PESA or bank transfer charges can apply on the receiving side, and some funds cap free withdrawals per month. Check your fund's schedule.
Not automatically, but the July 2026 table shows the trade-off is real at the extremes: instant Ziidi yielded about 6.4% gross while slower Nabo led at about 13.8%. Many savers split the difference: a small instant float plus the bulk in a higher-yield fund.
