If it tracks its average: vs Money Market Fund

Both use the same deposits and period. The gap is the potential reward for the extra risk, and is also what you stand to lose in a weak year. Lower-risk options: MMF, T-Bills, fixed deposits.

What is Mansa-X?

The Mansa-X Special Fund is an alternative fund offered by Standard Investment Bank (SIB) under the Standard Investment Trust Funds, licensed and regulated by Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority. Per the fact sheet, the manager is SIB, the trustee is Kingsland Court Trustees, the custodian is I&M Bank, and the auditor is Chartafai LLP. SIB describes it as a multi-asset, long/short strategy fund that aims to grow capital across different market conditions while managing downside risk. Unlike a money market fund that simply holds short-term instruments, Mansa-X actively trades, which is why it has the potential for higher returns and also carries more risk (SIB rates it 2 on a 1 to 5 scale).

Mansa-X returns, as reported by SIB

From SIB’s Mansa-X Special Fund Fact Sheet, Q1 2026 (KES fund):

Reported calendar-year net returns (KES fund): 2019 about 19.01%, 2020 18.75%, 2021 15.45%, 2022 15.59%, 2023 18.01%, 2024 19.53%, 2025 20.74%. These are historical figures, net of fees, reported by SIB. They are not a forecast and not a promise. A long/short fund can deliver flat or negative returns in some periods, so when you enter a rate above, treat it as an assumption you are testing, not an expected outcome. Past performance is not indicative of future returns.

What the fund invests in

Per the fact sheet, Mansa-X invests globally in single stocks and stock indices, fixed income, derivatives, precious metals, currencies, commodities, and cash and cash equivalents, and locally in NSE equities, NSE derivatives, exchange-traded funds and fixed income. By geography in Q1 2026 (KES fund), exposure was roughly Americas 52.85%, Europe 24.69%, Africa 17.13%, Middle East and Asia 3.81%, and Oceania 1.52%. Reported Q1 2026 top holdings included fixed income instruments, interest rate derivatives, WTI crude oil futures, and global names such as Exxon Mobil, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems and Monday.com, alongside Family Bank locally. Holdings change over time.

Minimums, fees and lock-in

Per the fact sheet: a minimum investment of KES 250,000 (USD 2,500 for the dollar fund) and a minimum top-up of KES 100,000 (USD 1,000). Charges are a 0% initial fee, a 0% redemption charge, a 5% per year financial services charge (pro-rated), and a 10% performance charge on returns above a 25% hurdle rate (15% for the USD fund). There is an initial 6-month lock-in period, after which SIB indicates withdrawals are processed in roughly 48 to 72 hours. Because the reported returns are already net of fees, this calculator does not deduct fees again. Always confirm the current schedule directly with SIB.

Mansa-X versus lower-risk options

Mansa-X is for growth money you can lock away for at least 6 to 12 months and on which you can tolerate swings. Keep your emergency fund and short-term cash in a liquid, lower-risk money market fund instead, and consider Treasury Bills or fixed deposits for guaranteed, government or bank-backed returns. For a fuller picture, read our Mansa-X versus OAK comparison.

SIB’s own fund disclaimer (Q1 2026 fact sheet): “Investing in alternative asset classes such as special collective investment schemes carries a higher level of risk, and may not be suitable for all types of investors. Before deciding to invest in any type of alternative investments you should consider your investment objectives, investment tenor and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some of your initial investment. The Fund is risk rated two due to the nature of its investments which are highly diversified across asset classes, trading instruments, geographies and underlying currency. Past performance is not indicative of future returns.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mansa-X Special Fund?

Mansa-X is a multi-asset special fund offered by Standard Investment Bank (SIB) under the Standard Investment Trust Funds, and licensed and regulated by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) of Kenya. Per its fact sheet, it uses a long/short trading model across global and local asset classes (single stocks and indices, fixed income, derivatives, precious metals, currencies, commodities and cash). It is a higher-risk product than a money market fund, rated 2 on SIB’s 1 to 5 risk scale, and returns are not guaranteed.

What returns has Mansa-X reported?

From SIB’s Mansa-X Special Fund Fact Sheet, Q1 2026 (KES fund): a net return of 4.74% in Q1 2026 and an average net return of 18.18% per year since inception in January 2019. The fact sheet also shows a KES 1,000,000 investment made on 1 January 2019 grew to KES 3,594,335 by 31 March 2026 (after fees). Calendar-year net returns ranged from about 15.45% (2021) to 20.74% (2025). All figures are net of fees and are historical, not a forecast. Past performance is not indicative of future returns.

What is the minimum investment in Mansa-X?

Per the fact sheet, the minimum is KES 250,000 (or USD 2,500 for the dollar fund) with a minimum top-up of KES 100,000 (USD 1,000). You invest through Standard Investment Bank after completing their onboarding. Confirm current minimums with SIB before investing.

What fees does Mansa-X charge?

The reported net returns are already after these fees, so enter a net rate in this calculator and do not subtract fees again.

How long is my money locked in Mansa-X?

The fact sheet states an initial lock-in period of 6 months. SIB’s website indicates withdrawals are then processed in roughly 48 to 72 hours. That is less liquid than a money market fund (1 to 3 days, no lock-in), so treat Mansa-X as money you can commit for at least 6 to 12 months. Confirm current redemption terms with SIB.

Mansa-X or a money market fund, which should I choose?

They serve different goals. A money market fund is for safe, liquid cash such as an emergency fund. Mansa-X targets higher growth for money you can lock away and on which you can tolerate volatility (it can have weak periods). Many investors hold both. The comparison above shows the gap if Mansa-X performs in line with its historical average, but the downside is the mirror image.
