Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about how PesaCalc's Kenyan calculators work, how we keep them current, and how we handle your data.

General

Are the PesaCalc calculators really free?
Yes — every calculator is 100% free, with no sign-up, no paywall, no trial. You don't create an account and you don't hit a "subscribe to see results" wall. We cover costs with a few unobtrusive ads.
Do you store my salary or financial details?
No. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your salary, loan figures, or anything else you type is never sent to or stored on our servers. The only optional data we collect is an email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to updates.
How current are your rates?
They reflect 2026 Kenyan law and market rates. We track the annual Finance Act, NSSF's phased schedule, EPRA's monthly fuel reviews and CBK's weekly Treasury auctions, and update calculators when figures move. Each page cites the law or schedule its numbers come from.
Is this financial advice?
No. PesaCalc gives you accurate numbers for planning. It is not financial, tax or investment advice. For significant decisions, confirm with your employer's payroll, KRA, or a licensed financial adviser.
How do I report an error?
Use the contact page. If a figure has gone stale or a calculation looks off, tell us and we'll verify and fix it quickly — accuracy is the whole point of the site.

Tax & Payroll

What deductions does the Net Salary calculator apply?
Four statutory deductions: PAYE (income tax, 10-35% bands), SHIF (2.75% of gross), NSSF Tier I & II (6% up to KES 108,000 from Feb 2026), and the Housing Levy (1.5% of gross). It also handles personal relief (KES 2,400/mo), insurance relief and pension contributions.
What is SHIF and how is the 2.75% applied?
SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund) replaced NHIF on 1 October 2024. It is 2.75% of your gross salary each month, with a minimum of KES 300. Unlike the old fixed NHIF bands, it scales with income and is deductible before PAYE is computed.
How much is NSSF in 2026?
From February 2026 (Year 4 of the NSSF Act 2013 rollout), Tier I covers the first KES 9,000 and Tier II covers 9,001-108,000, each at 6%. The maximum employee contribution is KES 6,480/month, which your employer matches.
Do your PAYE bands include the Housing Levy and reliefs?
Yes. The calculator deducts NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy to get taxable income, applies the Finance Act 2023 PAYE bands, then subtracts personal relief (and insurance relief if you enter a premium) — the same order KRA's iTax uses.
Can it work backwards from net to gross?
Yes — the Net Salary calculator has a reverse mode: enter the take-home figure you want and it solves for the gross salary that produces it after all deductions.

Imports & Other Calculators

How does the car import duty calculator work?
It uses KRA's CRSP (Current Retail Selling Price) method on the July 2025 schedule — depreciating the CRSP by age, then stacking Import Duty (35%), Excise (by engine size/fuel), VAT (16%), IDF and RDL. It covers thousands of vehicle variants.
Why does my KPLC or fuel figure differ slightly from the bill?
Pass-through charges like the Fuel Cost Charge, FERFA and EPRA pump prices change monthly. We update them each cycle, but if your bill is from a different month, edit the rate field with the figure on your statement for an exact match.
Are the Treasury Bill and SACCO calculators accurate?
Yes — they use the correct formulas (T-Bill discount yield, reducing-balance SACCO interest). Because auction yields move weekly, the T-Bill rate is an editable field; drop in the latest CBK auction figure for a precise result.

Do you use tracking cookies or sell data?
We don't sell data, and we don't set marketing trackers. Calculations are browser-side. See our Privacy Policy and Cookies pages for the full detail.
