Britam Money Market Fund in 2026: Yield, Minimums, and How It Compares
The Britam MMF is one of Kenya's most popular funds, KES 1,000 entry, an established insurer behind it, and a current yield around 9.7% gross. Here is what you actually earn after tax, and how it stacks up against Cytonn, Etica and CIC.
Ask a Kenyan where to park savings and “Britam MMF” is one of the first answers you will hear. It pairs a low KES 1,000 entry with the balance sheet of one of East Africa’s biggest insurers. The honest question for 2026 is not whether it is safe enough, it is whether the yield justifies it against newer funds paying 1–1.7 points more.
The numbers that matter
| Feature | Britam MMF (KES) |
|---|---|
| Current gross yield | ≈9.7% p.a. (moves weekly) |
| Net after 15% WHT | ≈8.3% p.a. |
| Minimum investment | KES 1,000 |
| Top-ups | Any amount, anytime (M-Pesa supported) |
| Withdrawal | Typically 1–3 business days |
| Fees | Management fee already reflected in published yield |
| Regulation | CMA-licensed; independent custodian & trustee |
Interest accrues daily and is credited net of tax, you never have to file anything with KRA for it (15% WHT is a final tax). Model your own amount and monthly top-up with the Britam preset in our MMF calculator.
Where Britam wins
Scale and track record. Britam Asset Managers runs one of the largest unit-trust books in Kenya. For savers who remember collapsed shadow-banking schemes, that history is worth a yield discount.
Frictionless entry. KES 1,000 to start, app/M-Pesa top-ups, fast small redemptions, it is built as a true savings wallet.
Ecosystem. If you already hold Britam insurance or pension products, everything sits under one roof.
Where it loses
Pure yield. In June 2026 Cytonn (≈11.4%), Etica (≈11.1%) and Lofty-Corban (≈10.2%) all out-pay it by a meaningful margin. On KES 1M, the gap between 9.7% and 11.1% gross is roughly KES 12,000 a year net. The counter-argument: those funds are younger and smaller, so you are being paid for incremental risk and patience with payouts. Many savers split the difference literally, core float in a big-brand fund, surplus in a higher-yield one. See the full June 2026 MMF ranking.
Britam MMF vs T-Bill vs fixed deposit
Against a 364-day Treasury Bill at ≈8.25% (locked, KES 100k minimum), Britam’s ≈8.3% net with full liquidity is the more flexible deal. Against the best negotiated fixed deposits (8.5–9%+ gross for large sums), a top-tier MMF usually still wins after you factor in access to your cash. Either way, at 6.7% inflation all of these preserve purchasing power, an idle bank account does not (see the damage).
