Frequently Asked Questions
What are current Kenya pump prices?
Per EPRA May 2025 review in Nairobi: Super Petrol KES 177.32/L, Diesel KES 162.91/L, Kerosene KES 146.93/L. Prices are revised on the 14th of every month and vary slightly by town (Mombasa is lowest, Lodwar / Mandera highest due to transport).
How is fuel cost calculated?
Cost = (Distance ÷ Consumption) × Pump Price. If your car does 12 km per litre and you drive 100 km on petrol at KES 177/L: (100 ÷ 12) × 177 = KES 1,475. Most fuel-efficient cars achieve 14-18 km/L, SUVs 8-12, pickups 7-10, sedans 12-15.
Is diesel cheaper than petrol in Kenya?
Per litre yes (KES 163 vs 177 ≈ 8% cheaper). Plus diesel engines are typically 25-30% more efficient. Combined savings can be ~30% lower fuel cost for long-distance drivers. However, diesel SUVs and trucks cost more to maintain and service.
Should I switch to an EV in Kenya?
EV cost per 100 km is roughly KES 230 (at 15 kWh / 100 km × KES 15.30 effective KPLC rate at home), vs KES 1,475 for a petrol car at 12 km/L. Savings: ~85%. But upfront cost is higher and charging infrastructure outside Nairobi is limited. Best for city commuters with home charging.
How much do Kenyans spend on fuel monthly?
Typical Nairobi commuter: 50 km daily × 22 working days = 1,100 km/month. At 12 km/L petrol: ~92 litres × 177 = KES 16,300/month. Cutting daily km by 20% via WFH or matatu use saves ~KES 3,300/month.
