Calculate your fuel cost in Kenya

This fuel cost calculator works out the cost of any trip or monthly commute in Kenya using current EPRA pump prices. Enter the distance and your vehicle’s efficiency (km per litre), and it computes the fuel cost, cost per kilometre, and your projected monthly and annual fuel spend, for petrol, diesel or an electric vehicle.

With 2026 Nairobi prices above KES 214/litre for petrol and KES 232/litre for diesel, fuel is a major household cost. The calculator also compares the same trip across fuel types so you can see exactly how much an efficient car, or switching to EV, would save you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are current Kenya pump prices?

Per EPRA review in Nairobi (15 Jun–14 Jul 2026): Super Petrol KES 214.03/L, Diesel KES 222.86/L, Kerosene KES 191.38/L (diesel dropped KES 10 in this review). Prices are revised on the 14th of every month and vary slightly by town (Mombasa is lowest, Lodwar / Mandera highest due to transport).

How is fuel cost calculated?

Cost = (Distance ÷ Consumption) × Pump Price. If your car does 12 km per litre and you drive 100 km on petrol at KES 214/L: (100 ÷ 12) × 214 = KES 1,785. Most fuel-efficient cars achieve 14-18 km/L, SUVs 8-12, pickups 7-10, sedans 12-15.

Is diesel cheaper than petrol in Kenya?

In 2026 diesel is actually slightly more expensive per litre than petrol in Kenya (≈ KES 233 vs 214), a reversal of the historic pattern, driven by global diesel demand. But diesel engines remain 25-30% more efficient, so for long-distance and heavy vehicles diesel still wins on cost-per-km. For city commuting, petrol is now often cheaper overall.

Should I switch to an EV in Kenya?

EV cost per 100 km is roughly KES 230 (at 15 kWh / 100 km × KES 15.30 effective KPLC rate at home), vs ~KES 1,785 for a petrol car at 12 km/L. Savings: ~87%. With 2026 pump prices above KES 214/L, the EV case is stronger than ever, though upfront cost is higher and fast-charging outside Nairobi is still limited. Best for city commuters with home charging.

How much do Kenyans spend on fuel monthly?

Typical Nairobi commuter: 50 km daily × 22 working days = 1,100 km/month. At 12 km/L petrol: ~92 litres × 214 = KES 19,700/month. Cutting daily km by 20% via WFH or matatu use saves ~KES 3,900/month.
